FEAR GRIPS EDO COMMUNITY AS GUNMEN ATTACK HERDERS, STEAL SLAUGHTERED COW
Residents of Ahia and Onogholo communities in Edo State are living in fear after unknown gunmen attacked a group of herders and made away with cattle meat in a brazen nighttime raid.
The incident, which happened around 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, near Ahia Market in Ubiaja, has left locals worried about their safety. According to community sources, a group of armed men emerged from the bush and opened fire on herders who were guiding their cattle back toward Okene in neighboring Kogi State.
A resident of the nearby Oloshi community recounted that during the chaos, one of the cows was shot, causing the rest of the herd—and the terrified herders—to scatter in all directions.
“Later that night, the attackers reportedly returned to the scene, slaughtered the wounded cow, and carted away the meat under the cover of darkness,” another villager shared.
The motive behind the attack is still a mystery. No group or individual has claimed responsibility, and efforts by concerned residents to identify the culprits have so far come up empty.
Local security sources confirmed that investigations are ongoing to track down those behind the crime. Meanwhile, the distressed herders are appealing to authorities and kind-hearted individuals to help locate their scattered livestock and ensure justice is served.
The incident has heightened tension in the area, with many residents now fearful that such attacks could become more frequent if swift action isn’t taken.
Authorities are urging anyone with useful information to come forward to aid the investigation.
