FCCPC WARNS AGAINST FRAGMENTED STATE ELECTRICITY MARKET REGULATIONS

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has cautioned against the emergence of fragmented electricity market regulations across states, warning that inconsistent rules could hinder investment and disrupt the growth of Nigeria’s power sector.

The commission said while ongoing electricity sector reforms are encouraging greater state participation, regulatory frameworks should remain coordinated to ensure a stable, competitive, and consumer-friendly electricity market.

According to the FCCPC, inconsistent regulations could create uncertainty for investors, increase compliance costs, and affect the efficient delivery of electricity services across different jurisdictions.

The commission stressed the importance of harmonising policies to promote fair competition, protect consumer interests, and provide a predictable business environment for electricity operators.

Energy experts said clear and coordinated regulation is essential for attracting private investment, expanding electricity access, and improving service quality as Nigeria continues to decentralise parts of its power sector.

The FCCPC reaffirmed its commitment to working with federal and state authorities, regulators, and industry stakeholders to support reforms that strengthen the electricity market while safeguarding the rights of consumers.
