FCCPC RESUMES DIGITAL LENDING RULES AFTER COURT VICTORY
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has resumed the implementation of its digital lending rules following a favourable court ruling that upheld its regulatory authority over the sector.
The FCCPC announced the resumption on Friday, saying the rules are designed to protect consumers from exploitative practices and ensure fair lending standards in the digital lending space.
FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the court victory has strengthened the commission’s mandate to regulate digital lending activities and safeguard the interests of borrowers. “We are committed to creating a fair and transparent digital lending environment. The rules will protect consumers and promote responsible lending practices,” Bello stated.
The digital lending rules cover areas such as interest rate caps, data privacy, loan recovery practices, and disclosure requirements. The FCCPC had earlier suspended the rules following legal challenges from some fintech operators.
The court’s decision has been welcomed by consumer rights groups, who have been advocating for stronger regulation of digital lending to prevent abuse and protect vulnerable borrowers. They called for strict enforcement of the rules and continuous monitoring of compliance by lending platforms.
Digital lenders have been urged to align their operations with the new regulations to avoid sanctions. The FCCPC said it will work with stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation and address any challenges that may arise.
The resumption of the digital lending rules is expected to bring more order and consumer protection to the rapidly growing fintech sector in Nigeria. The FCCPC has assured that it will continue to engage with industry players to strike a balance between innovation and consumer protection.
The development is seen as a significant step towards creating a more responsible and sustainable digital lending ecosystem in the country.
