FATHER, THREE OTHERS ARRESTED OVER ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO SELL BABY IN LAGOS

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a father and three other suspects over an alleged attempt to sell his 16-month-old daughter. The suspects were reportedly apprehended after information reached the police about a plan to hand the young child over to another person in exchange for money. The case has raised fresh concerns about the growing cases of child trafficking and the vulnerability of children from troubled or financially disadvantaged families.

The father, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was reportedly working with three other individuals who allegedly played different roles in the planned transaction. Police investigators are now trying to establish how the suspects came into contact with the prospective buyer and what motivated the alleged attempt to dispose of the child. The young girl has since been taken into protective custody as the authorities continue with the investigation.

The police command said the arrests followed intelligence received about the suspected child sale, allowing its operatives to intervene before the transaction could be completed. The suspects were taken into custody for questioning, while investigators are expected to examine their communications and movements to determine whether they have been involved in similar activities or are connected to a wider child trafficking network.

The incident comes amid continued warnings from security agencies and child protection organisations about the methods used by traffickers to obtain children. Some criminal groups reportedly target vulnerable families with promises of financial assistance, employment, education or better opportunities for their children. Authorities have repeatedly urged parents and guardians to be extremely careful about handing their children over to strangers or organisations without first confirming their identity and legitimacy.

The police said the investigation would continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted sale and to establish the level of involvement of each suspect. The authorities are also expected to ensure that the child receives the necessary protection and care while efforts are made to reunite her with a safe family environment. The arrest has again highlighted the need for stronger community vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities involving children to the police and relevant child protection agencies.
