FALCONS ON FIRE WITH 3-0 WIN OVER TUNISIA IN WAFCON KICKOFF
Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Tunisia on Sunday, July 7. The match, held at 5:00 p.m. (WAT), ended at approximately 6:45 p.m., wrapping up with a dominant display from the nine-time African champions.
The Falcons wasted no time asserting themselves, as star forward Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 4th minute, heading in a brilliant cross from Omorinsola Babajide.
Coach Justine Madugu’s team dictated the pace throughout the encounter, leaving goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with little to worry about. Deborah Abiodun nearly doubled Nigeria’s lead five minutes before the break, skillfully maneuvering through Tunisia’s defense but unable to beat the goalkeeper.
Nigeria’s second goal came just before halftime, with Babajide calmly slotting home after a clever move. Moments later, Ashleigh Plumptre appeared to make it 3-0, but her goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.
At the restart, Madugu made three changes, bringing on Chiwendu Ihezuo, Christy Ucheibe, and Esther Okoronkwo in place of Oshoala, Abiodun, and Babajide. The Falcons remained firmly in control, with Plumptre and Osinachi Ohale both threatening to increase the tally.
The third and final goal came in the 84th minute, as substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo finished clinically to seal the victory.
The match concluded with a comfortable 3-0 win for Nigeria, who now turn their attention to their second group stage match against Botswana on Wednesday, July 10.
