Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has cautioned the public against the intentional circulation of outdated video clips designed to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and threaten national stability.

The warning came through a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The NPF expressed growing concern over the repeated resurfacing of old footage on social media, often used to spread misinformation, stir unrest, and cast the Police in a negative light.

“The continued circulation of old video materials aimed at misrepresenting the current state of the Police is a threat to public peace and national security,” the statement said.

Among the examples cited was a video showing a Police Mobile Force officer complaining about difficult working conditions while on assignment in Yobe State. According to the NPF, the video was recorded years ago and the issues raised were promptly resolved through administrative procedures.

Another referenced video featured a member of the Counter Terrorism Unit accusing the government of neglect and political interference in security operations. The Force clarified that this too was an old recording, and investigations had disproven the allegations. Disciplinary measures were taken against the officer involved.

The Police emphasised that these clips no longer represent the current realities of the Force, which has made significant improvements in both officer welfare and operational effectiveness.

“These videos are outdated and do not reflect the ongoing reforms and progress within the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement added.

The IGP urged Nigerians to avoid spreading false information, stressing that such actions could undermine public trust, promote fear, and erode confidence in the Force. He reiterated the Police’s unwavering dedication to protecting lives, property, and national security.

“Spreading misleading content not only discredits the Police but also endangers societal peace,” the IGP warned.

The statement concluded with a call for responsible media engagement and digital citizenship, encouraging the public to verify the authenticity of content before sharing it.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
