FAILURE TO PROSECUTE BANDITS FUELLING MORE ATTACKS — AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Amnesty International has condemned the latest deadly attack on worshippers at a mosque in Na’alma village, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The human rights organization described the incident as “horrific,” urging Nigerian authorities to take genuine steps to protect citizens rather than merely issuing statements of condemnation after each tragedy.
According to Amnesty, the armed men stormed the mosque during early morning prayers, leaving an unspecified number of people dead and several others injured. Many residents who tried to flee remain missing, while those critically wounded are receiving treatment in hospitals.
This attack comes less than two months after gunmen invaded another mosque in Unguwan Mantau, also in Malumfashi, killing over 50 people.
In a post on its official X handle, Amnesty International criticized both federal and state governments for failing to bring perpetrators to justice. The organization warned that this continued inaction only fuels impunity and emboldens attackers to strike again.
It stated, “Consistent failure of the Nigerian authorities to bring the actual suspected perpetrators to justice is emboldening impunity and has left rural communities constantly bracing up for the next attack.”
Amnesty called on the government to prioritize security and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted, stressing that only real justice can end the cycle of violence plaguing communities across northern Nigeria.
