Arsenal secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a confident 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Tuesday’s last-16 second leg, sealing a 3-1 aggregate triumph at the Emirates Stadium.

Eberechi Eze set the tone with a spectacular long-range strike late in the first half, while Declan Rice added a composed finish after the break to put the result beyond doubt.

Often criticised this season for grinding out results, Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a more polished performance, showcasing both attacking flair and control throughout the encounter.

After being held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg—rescued by a late penalty from Kai Havertz—Arsenal looked far more assured in the return fixture, progressing to the quarter-finals for a third consecutive year.

They will now face Sporting Lisbon, who staged an impressive comeback to overturn a three-goal deficit and eliminate Bodo/Glimt 5-3 on aggregate. Arsenal previously dominated the Portuguese side 5-1 in Lisbon during last season’s group stage.

The victory provides ideal momentum ahead of their League Cup Final clash against Manchester City at Wembley.

Chasing a historic quadruple, Arsenal—whose last trophy came in the FA Cup in 2020—currently sit nine points clear at the top of the Premier League as they pursue their first league title in 22 years. They are also set to face Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals later this season.

Despite never having won the Champions League—finishing runners-up to Barcelona in 2006—this campaign is shaping up to be one of the most promising in the club’s history.

Teenage sensation Max Dowman, who recently became the youngest scorer in Premier League history, was named on the bench but ultimately not required as Arsenal dominated proceedings.

Match Summary

Arsenal began on the front foot, applying sustained pressure from the outset. Gabriel Magalhães came close early on, heading wide from a Bukayo Saka corner.

Leandro Trossard tested Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich multiple times, but the German shot-stopper produced a string of impressive saves to keep his side in contention.

However, the breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute when Eze controlled the ball on the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner, leaving Blaswich with no chance.

Arsenal maintained their intensity after the interval, and their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute. Rice won possession deep in Leverkusen territory before advancing and calmly slotting home to double the lead—his first Champions League goal of the season.

With relentless pressing and fluid attacking play, Arsenal comfortably saw out the match, underlining their credentials as genuine contenders in this year’s competition.
