Nigeria showcased its dominance in youth athletics on the final day of the third CAA African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships, as local star Miracle Ezechukwu led a remarkable clean sweep in the girls’ 200m, clinching her third gold medal of the tournament.

At a vibrant MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Sunday, Ezechukwu sprinted to victory in the U-18 200m final, clocking a personal best of 23.87 seconds. Teammates Chigozie Nwankwo and Perezide Sigah followed closely, finishing second and third with times of 24.01s and 24.26s respectively, securing a dominant 1-2-3 finish for Nigeria.

Having already taken gold in the 100m earlier in the week, Ezechukwu described the championships as a dream come true and thanked her coach and the organisers for their support.

Shortly after, Nigeria replicated its success in the U-20 women’s 200m final. Success Oyibu stormed to victory with a new personal best of 23.56s, leading another clean sweep for the host nation. She was trailed by U-20 100m champion Chioma Cynthia Nweke (23.95s) and Lucy Nwankwo (24.24s), ensuring Nigeria claimed all six available medals across both female sprint events.

Oyibu attributed her success to divine guidance and credited the team's rigorous preparation.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s U-20 men’s 4x100m relay team was reinstated as champions following a successful protest over an alleged exchange zone violation. The Confederation of African Athletics ruled in Nigeria’s favor, awarding the gold to Saliu Toyeeb, Joachim Uyovwiyoma, John Caleb, and Malik Oluwatobi—securing Nigeria’s third straight win in the event.

The women’s U-20 4x400m relay team added another gold with a championship record time of 3:37.02. The quartet of Odot Udo, Toheebat Jimoh, Anita Enaruna, and Favour Onyah shattered a record that had stood since 1997, finishing nearly eight seconds ahead of their South African rivals.

The U-20 men’s 4x400m team of Victor Sampson, David Akhalu, Gafar Badmus, and Ezekiel Asuquo closed out the day in spectacular fashion, setting a new championship record of 3:06.66 and capping off a golden final day for Nigeria.

Athletes from other nations also delivered standout performances. South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela claimed his third gold medal of the competition by winning the U-18 boys’ 200m in 21.29s.

Botswana’s Justice Oratile secured a sprint double in the U-20 category, adding the 200m title (21.02s) to his earlier 400m victory.

In hurdles, South Africa’s Tumi Ramokgopa completed a double with wins in both the U-20 100mH and 400mH, while her compatriot Myburgh Stiaan overcame a stumble to take the U-18 boys’ 400mH title in 52.71s.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
