EXPERTS URGE NIGERIAN STATES TO FULLY EMBRACE BLUE ECONOMY POLICY
Maritime economists and development experts have called on state governments to fully integrate the Blue Economy policy into their development agendas to harness the vast potential of Nigeria’s ocean and coastal resources.
At a recent high-level forum, specialists highlighted opportunities in sustainable fisheries, shipping and logistics, coastal tourism, offshore renewable energy, and aquaculture. They noted that many states with significant maritime boundaries are yet to develop comprehensive frameworks for blue economy growth.
Participants stressed the need for investment in infrastructure, skills development, and environmental protection to ensure long-term sustainability. The policy is seen as a critical tool for economic diversification, job creation, and climate resilience, especially for coastal communities.
Experts recommended public-private partnerships, technology adoption, and alignment with national and international standards. They also called for stronger inter-state collaboration to address shared challenges such as pollution and illegal fishing.
The Federal Government has previously outlined a national Blue Economy strategy, but implementation at the state level remains key to unlocking its full benefits.
Stakeholders believe that proactive adoption of the policy could significantly boost Nigeria’s GDP and improve livelihoods in the maritime sector.
