EXPERTS EXPLAIN POSSIBLE CAUSES BEHIND NEPAL’S DEADLY FLOODS
A devastating flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border has killed at least 160 people and left hundreds of others missing, with experts examining a combination of geological and climatic factors that may have contributed to the disaster.
The disaster occurred on Wednesday after a massive wall of mud, rocks and water surged through communities in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and neighbouring areas. The flood destroyed homes, roads and other infrastructure, while several people were swept away by the powerful current.
Experts say the exact sequence of events is still being investigated. However, evidence points to a landslide or ice-rock avalanche that suddenly displaced a huge amount of material into a river, producing a destructive surge downstream.
One major possibility being examined is a glacial lake outburst flood. Such events occur when a lake formed by melting glaciers suddenly releases a large volume of water, sending torrents downstream with little warning. The rapidly changing Himalayan environment has increased concern about the vulnerability of communities located near glaciers, lakes and steep mountain valleys.
Scientists have also stressed that flash floods of this nature can be extremely difficult to predict. The sudden combination of falling rocks, mud and enormous quantities of water can create a fast-moving surge that gives people little time to escape. Experts have compared the resulting flow to liquid concrete because of its tremendous destructive force.
Although an earthquake was initially considered as a possible trigger, subsequent geological assessment indicated that a landslide was responsible for the event. The disaster's location in a mountainous Himalayan region makes the area particularly vulnerable to landslides, floods and other natural hazards.
The consequences have been particularly severe because the affected areas include important transport routes and communities serving tourists and pilgrims travelling between Nepal and Tibet. Several foreign nationals remain missing, adding an international dimension to the rescue operation.
Rescue teams have been deployed on both sides of the border, with helicopters being used to search difficult-to-reach areas. Authorities are also working to identify missing people and provide medical treatment to survivors.
Experts have warned that the danger may not be over, as debris and temporary blockages created upstream could trigger additional flooding. They have consequently called for stronger monitoring systems, improved early-warning mechanisms and better preparedness in vulnerable Himalayan communities.
The disaster has once again highlighted the growing risks faced by populations living in mountainous regions, where extreme weather, unstable slopes and rapidly changing glacial conditions can combine to produce sudden and catastrophic flooding.
