Industry stakeholders have called for the adoption of enhanced driver training strategies as a critical step toward reducing road accidents and promoting safety.

The appeal was made during the annual Train-the-Trainer workshop organised by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), held under the theme “Drivers’ Education: Panacea to Economic Growth and Development.”

According to a statement issued at the event, the workshop highlighted the essential role of driver education in advancing road safety and contributing to Lagos State’s broader economic development goals.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, officially declared the workshop open and reiterated the state government’s commitment to safer transportation systems through structured driver education and strict adherence to road safety standards.

Founder of Leap Driving Academy, Ojo Balogun, delivered a presentation titled “Innovative Driver Training for Enhanced Road Safety,” where he stressed the importance of tailoring instruction to individual learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic—to improve comprehension, retention, and practical driving skills.

He said, “We introduced simulation goggles that mimic the effects of blood alcohol concentration levels between 0.08 and 0.15. Audience volunteers performed coordination tasks both with and without the goggles. The difference in performance was striking, clearly demonstrating how alcohol severely affects reaction time, balance, and judgement. This hands-on activity effectively illustrated the dangers of impaired driving in a memorable and engaging way.”

Balogun concluded by urging all relevant bodies—government agencies, training institutions, and private operators—to adopt innovative and adaptive training approaches. He noted that prioritising driver education would not only help reduce traffic accidents and fatalities but also enhance productivity and economic development by ensuring safer roads.

As Lagos experiences increasing urbanisation and vehicle density, the workshop serves as a significant step toward advancing a culture of road safety through education and innovation.

The General Manager of LASDRI, Afusat Tiamiyu, was also acknowledged for her leadership in promoting training compliance and spearheading efforts to raise the standard of driver education across the state.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
