EXPERT URGES VOTERS TO BREAK CYCLE OF POVERTY, ELECTION MANIPULATION

A development economist and author, Herbert Daniel, has urged Nigerians to become more politically conscious and make informed choices ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Daniel made the call during an interview in Jos following the release of his latest book, We Need You Poor So That We Can Rule: The Voice of the Political Manipulator.

He said poverty, lack of information, and political manipulation could leave citizens vulnerable to political tactics involving gifts, promises, ethnicity, religion, and misinformation.

According to him, voters should look beyond immediate benefits and political promises when deciding who to support during elections.

Daniel urged Nigerians to examine the records and competence of political candidates and consider whether their policies and leadership could improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

He said education and access to reliable information were important tools for helping citizens make independent political decisions.

The author also encouraged young people to participate actively in governance and understand the relationship between political decisions and their everyday lives.

He said citizens should recognise their power through informed voting and continued participation in democratic processes.

Daniel argued that poverty should not become a permanent condition or an avenue through which citizens are manipulated politically.

He maintained that education, critical thinking, economic empowerment, and active citizenship could help Nigerians challenge the cycle of poor leadership and underdevelopment.

As the 2027 elections approach, he urged voters to question political promises, assess candidates based on their records, and use their votes responsibly.

Daniel said his goal was to encourage a wider national conversation about the choices Nigerians make at the ballot box and the role citizens play in shaping the country's future.
