EXPERT SAYS MECHANISATION KEY TO STRENGTHENING NIGERIA’S FOOD SECURITY

An agricultural expert has emphasized that mechanisation remains a critical factor in achieving sustainable food security in Nigeria.

The expert said the country’s reliance on traditional farming methods continues to limit productivity, especially as demand for food rises alongside population growth.

According to him, increased use of modern farming equipment, irrigation systems, and improved technology would significantly boost agricultural output and reduce post-harvest losses.

He noted that mechanisation would also help reduce the physical burden on farmers, improve efficiency, and make farming more attractive to younger generations.

The expert called for stronger government support through subsidies, training programmes, and access to affordable machinery for smallholder farmers.

Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have also stressed the need for improved infrastructure and financing to support large-scale adoption of modern farming practices.

They added that private sector involvement and investment in agricultural technology could accelerate the transition toward more productive farming systems.

The expert concluded that mechanisation is essential for reducing food imports and ensuring long-term food security in Nigeria.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
