EX-FOOTBALLER IGHEDOSA USES NEW BOOK TO EXPOSE HARDSHIPS BEHIND AFRICAN PLAYERS’ EUROPEAN DREAMS

Former NEPA Lagos footballer, Victor Ighedosa, has released a new book documenting the challenges and difficult experiences faced by African footballers who travel abroad in search of professional careers.

The book, titled “MARCUS, An African Boy’s European Dream,” was launched in Lagos and focuses on the realities that often remain hidden behind the dream of playing professional football in Europe.

Ighedosa, who made history as the first Nigerian professional footballer to play in the Qatari Football League, said the book was inspired by his own experiences as well as the struggles encountered by many young African players pursuing opportunities overseas.

He explained that the book combines fiction and non-fiction while drawing heavily from real-life experiences and challenges faced by African footballers.

According to him, many families in Africa often have little understanding of the difficulties their children may encounter after leaving the country in pursuit of football careers.

Ighedosa recalled that his own first experience in Europe exposed him to several challenges for which he was not adequately prepared. He said he encountered racism and struggled to adjust to a completely different cultural environment.

He also highlighted other difficulties, including unfamiliar food, weather conditions, language barriers and differences in time zones.

Beyond cultural adjustment, the former footballer said African players abroad can also face serious issues involving immigration, mental health and injuries.

He noted that these challenges can significantly affect players, particularly those who travel abroad with high expectations but lack adequate support systems or preparation for life outside their home countries.

Ighedosa said the book was also dedicated to the memory of his late brother, Marcus, as well as young African footballers who were unable to achieve their dreams of playing professionally in Europe.

He expressed hope that the book would help aspiring footballers and their families develop a better understanding of what awaits players who leave Africa in pursuit of international opportunities.

The launch attracted several prominent figures from Nigerian football and the wider sporting community.

Among those present were football club owner Adewale Teluwo, former Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director Ambassador Fanny Amun, former Lagos State Football Association chairman Waidi Akanni and current Lagos FA chairman Hameed Liamid.

Several former Nigerian internationals also attended the event to support the former footballer and his literary project.

Teluwo supported the book launch with a contribution of ₦2 million, while Akanni, on behalf of the Lagos Legends, contributed ₦500,000, alongside other donations made during the event.

The publication provides an opportunity to look beyond the glamour often associated with African footballers securing contracts abroad and draws attention to the personal, cultural and professional difficulties that can accompany such journeys.

Ighedosa's work is expected to serve as both a tribute to those who pursued the European football dream and a source of guidance for younger players hoping to follow the same path.
