EX-AVIATION MINISTER SAYS OKONJO-IWEALA CONVINCED HIM AGAINST ‘JAPA’

A former Minister of Aviation has revealed that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), persuaded him not to relocate abroad, popularly referred to in Nigeria as "Japa."

Speaking about the experience, the former minister said he had considered leaving Nigeria in search of opportunities but changed his mind after discussions with Okonjo-Iweala, who encouraged him to remain and contribute to the country's development.

He noted that her advice reinforced the importance of using one's skills and experience to drive positive change at home despite the challenges facing the nation.

The former minister said Nigeria needs committed professionals across sectors to support reforms, strengthen institutions, and promote sustainable economic growth.

Observers said the remarks come amid ongoing conversations about the increasing number of skilled Nigerians seeking opportunities overseas due to economic pressures and career prospects.
