Gunmen have allegedly killed a Europe-based man, identified simply as Derrick, in Benin City, Edo State.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, stated that an investigation is ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.

The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend along Igun Street in Benin City.

Witnesses said the assailants shot the victim after he allegedly resisted an attempt to snatch his gold necklace, estimated to be worth N50 million.

It was gathered that Derrick, who had just returned from Europe, was in the area to purchase spare parts for his vehicle when he was attacked. The armed men, who reportedly arrived in a Lexus SUV, confronted him and demanded the necklace.

An eyewitness suggested the attackers may have trailed the victim to the location. According to the account, Derrick questioned why he should hand over the necklace, which allegedly provoked the assailants. One of them retrieved a pump-action gun from their vehicle and shot him twice in the leg.

The attackers then removed his jewelry and fled the scene. Though sympathisers rushed the victim to a hospital, he was confirmed dead on arrival.
