EROSION: COMMUNITIES LAMENT COLLAPSE OF HOUSES IN ABIA

Residents of several communities in Abia State are lamenting the worsening gully erosion crisis, which has led to the collapse of many houses and destruction of farmlands.

Affected indigenes in areas such as Umuahia North and parts of Isuikwuato Local Government Area raised the alarm on Wednesday, calling for urgent government intervention.

Many families have been displaced after their homes were completely swallowed by expanding erosion sites, leaving them in dire conditions.

A community leader, Chief Emmanuel Kalu, appealed to both the state and federal governments to treat the situation as an emergency.

“If nothing is done quickly, more lives and properties will be lost to this natural disaster,” he warned.

The Abia State Government acknowledged the severity of the problem and promised to engage relevant federal agencies for immediate intervention and long-term erosion control measures.

Erosion has remained a persistent environmental threat in several parts of the state for years.
