EPL’S EUROPEAN SPOTS CONFIRMED AS CAS RULING SENDS CRYSTAL PALACE TO CONFERENCE LEAGUE
The lineup of Premier League clubs in this season’s European competitions is now official — and there’s been a last-minute shake-up.
On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected Crystal Palace’s appeal against their demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League. The ruling stems from UEFA’s multi-club ownership (MCO) regulations, with the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) finding Palace too closely linked with French side Lyon.
Palace had challenged the decision, but with their appeal thrown out, they will now enter the UEFA Conference League at the playoff round later this month.
Their loss is Nottingham Forest’s gain. Forest have been bumped up from the Conference League to the Europa League, joining Aston Villa, who qualified for the tournament after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.
Here’s the final list of EPL teams in Europe this season:
Champions League: Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Chelsea
Europa League: Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest
Conference League: Crystal Palace
This ruling not only reshapes the Premier League’s European representation but also adds an extra twist to the season ahead, with Forest getting a bigger stage and Palace facing a different challenge in Europe’s third-tier competition.
