EPL: AMORIM EXPLAINS WHY HE DROPPED SESKO AGAINST LIVERPOOL
Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has explained why he decided to drop in-form striker Benjamin Sesko from the starting lineup in their 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Sesko, who had scored in two consecutive games, was left on the bench as Amorim chose to start Matheus Cunha upfront, supported by Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount.
Speaking after the match, Amorim said the tactical decision was made to better handle Liverpool’s defensive pair, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
“Sometimes the characteristics of the game change the way you are going to approach it,” Amorim said.
“For example, if we put Ben [Sesko], I think it’s easier for this kind of centre-backs to control our striker. So, we tried something different with Cunha in the middle.”
The Portuguese tactician added that coaching decisions often look smarter after a win.
“When you win, the coach is amazing. When you lose, people say something is wrong with the manager. I understand that,” he added.
The win over Liverpool was a statement result for Amorim’s Manchester United side, who continue their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
