ENUGU LAW OFFICERS BEGIN WARNING STRIKE OVER WELFARE ISSUES
Law officers in Enugu State have commenced a seven-day warning strike over unresolved welfare and remuneration issues involving the state government.
The action was announced by the Enugu State chapter of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria and began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026.
The association said the strike followed prolonged efforts to engage the government over concerns affecting its members, without a satisfactory resolution.
According to the association, law officers have faced reduced salaries since 2020, while some allowances, including hazard allowance, were later removed. The officers also said they often use personal funds to perform official duties.
Their demands include harmonisation of remuneration with that of magistrates, payment of Bar Practising Fees and Annual Bar Conference fees, as well as restoration and payment of transportation, hazard and wardrobe allowances, including outstanding arrears.
During the strike, members have been directed to withdraw from official duties, including court appearances and visits to correctional centres, police stations and other government-related assignments.
The association said members would instead work from home during the seven-day action.
It said the dispute was not limited to allowances but also concerned professional dignity, fair remuneration and improved working conditions for officers responsible for providing legal services to the state.
