Catholic priests and lay faithful of the Diocese of Nsukka, Enugu State, have staged a solemn rosary procession at the very spot where one of their own, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, was brutally murdered last week.

Fr. Eya, who until his death was the parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu, was gunned down on Friday, September 20, by assailants suspected to be unknown gunmen.

According to community sources, the cleric was returning home from a pastoral duty when armed men riding on a motorcycle intercepted his vehicle along the Eha-Ndiagu road and opened fire, killing him instantly.

The tragic incident sparked shockwaves across the diocese, prompting priests, parishioners, and community members to gather for prayers and solidarity. During the procession, they recited the rosary and called for divine intervention, while also demanding justice and improved security for clergy and residents alike.

The killing of Fr. Eya adds to the growing list of violent attacks on clerics and innocent citizens in parts of the country, raising renewed concerns over insecurity in Enugu and across Nigeria.
