EMIR OF LAFIA APPOINTED CHANCELLOR OF NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY BY KANO GOVERNOR
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has named the Emir of Lafia, His Royal Highness Justice (Rtd) Sidi Muhammad Bage, as the new Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano.
The appointment was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the decision aligns with Governor Yusuf’s vision to strengthen ties between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and its academic environment, promoting leadership anchored in integrity and service to the nation.
Justice Bage, born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, is an accomplished legal professional and royal figure. He obtained a diploma and an LLB in law from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. His judicial career began as a magistrate in 1982, advancing to High Court Judge in 1992, and later to the Court of Appeal in 2007. He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2017.
In March 2019, following the demise of Emir Isa Mustapha Agwai I, Justice Bage became the 17th Emir of Lafia. Since ascending the throne, he has been recognized for promoting peace, unity, and traditional values.
The official statement noted: “With this appointment, Northwest University, Kano, upholds its tradition of appointing exemplary figures to ceremonial and advisory roles, ensuring experienced leadership within the institution.”
Governor Yusuf described the selection of Emir Bage as a strategic effort to introduce seasoned and principled leadership into the university system.
“Choosing a former Supreme Court Justice and a revered traditional ruler as Chancellor reflects our dedication to academic distinction, ethical values, and national unity,” the governor stated.
He further praised Emir Bage’s legacy of fairness, wisdom, and public service—qualities he believes will inspire both students and faculty.
The appointment letter was delivered in person to the Emir at his palace in Lafia by the Chairman of the University Council, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa.
