Former NUC Executive Secretary highlights implementation of new national ranking framework and increased research output as primary drivers for projected international academic prominence
Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has asserted that Nigerian universities are positioned to break global academic ranking records starting from 2027.
Speaking on recent performance metrics, Professor Okebukola noted that strategic educational reforms, institutional capacity building, and heightened research productivity across federal, state, and private tertiary institutions are aligning to significantly elevate the international standing of the country's university system.
The renowned educationist highlighted that the deployment of a modernized national ranking framework, designed to complement global benchmarking systems like the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, is fostering healthy competition, enhancing doctoral output, and strengthening institutional research environments nationwide.
Okebukola emphasized that with 29 Nigerian universities already featuring in global rankings and several others positioned as reporter institutions, continuous investment in infrastructure, academic integrity, and digital learning tools will enable Nigerian higher education institutions to achieve unprecedented, record-breaking milestones in global academic standings over the coming years.
