EKITI VETERAN JOURNALISTS CALL FOR STRONGER PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
The League of Veteran Journalists in Ekiti State has called for stronger professional standards in journalism amid concerns over misinformation, disinformation and the growing pressure to publish quickly.
The league’s state chairman, Kayode Oni, made the call in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji as grand patron of the organisation and the unveiling of other patrons.
Oni said changes in the media landscape, including the rise of social media, digital platforms and artificial intelligence, had expanded the reach of journalism while creating new ethical challenges.
He identified manipulated photographs and videos, anonymous sources and click-driven headlines among issues that could undermine professional standards.
The league chairman said journalists must remain committed to accuracy, fairness and responsible reporting, while also protecting press freedom.
He said the new patrons’ initiative was designed to strengthen the organisation and broaden its engagement with individuals and institutions committed to journalism and public service.
Oyebanji, represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, commended the veteran journalists for their contributions to the profession.
He said the relationship between government and the media remained important to the development and public image of the state.
The governor also urged journalists to report government policies and programmes accurately and professionally, describing the media as an important channel through which citizens assess developments in the state.
