Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved the immediate extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and the years of service from 35 to 40.

The governor made this announcement on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.

As part of his administration’s commitment to reward dedication and excellence in the teaching profession, Oyebanji also presented cash awards worth N46 million to outstanding teachers across the state.

He explained that the extension of the retirement age and service years was aimed at retaining experienced educators in the classroom and further strengthening the state’s education system.

A special committee, according to him, will be constituted to supervise the implementation process and ensure that only teachers who are physically and mentally fit benefit from the new policy.

The governor further announced an upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments, as well as the immediate payment of outstanding 2019 leave bonus arrears.

“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built. This initiative aligns with our shared prosperity agenda to improve their welfare and inspire them to continue shaping the next generation,” Oyebanji stated.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
