Tertiary institution students in Ekiti State have launched an environmental sanitation campaign aimed at encouraging residents to keep their communities clean and increase tree planting.

The campaign, tagged “Keep Ekiti Clean, Keep Ekiti Green,” was held in Ado Ekiti to mark World Cleanup Day 2026 under the Ekiti Students Skill Up with YOMA Initiative.

The students took the campaign to markets and streets, engaging market women, commercial motorcycle operators, community leaders and other residents on responsible waste disposal and environmental protection.

The initiative was organised with support from UNICEF through a partnership involving the Ekiti State Government and Generation Unlimited 9ja.

Project Lead, Modupe Adetiba, said the campaign was designed to demonstrate that environmental protection requires active participation from residents and communities, not only government agencies.

She urged residents to dispose of waste properly and plant trees to replace those removed.

The participating students were drawn from several tertiary institutions, including Ekiti State University, Federal University Oye-Ekiti and Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti.

A representative of the Ekiti State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Olasehinde Oloniyo, said the programme also focused on youth development, leadership and capacity building.

Participants said the campaign would help raise awareness about pollution, erosion, flooding and the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.
