The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two suspects for allegedly defrauding job seekers of ₦2.9 million.

The suspects, Bolaji Kazeem Akinwunmi, also known as “Bolaji Original,” and his accomplice and former lover, Kemisola Mary Akinbo from Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, were taken into custody following investigations.

According to the EFCC, Akinwunmi allegedly posed as an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service, claiming he had access to job openings for interested applicants.

He reportedly sold these fake job slots to victims at between ₦40,000 and ₦45,000, targeting young job seekers and collecting money under the pretense of securing employment with federal agencies.

The agency further revealed that, to avoid detection, Akinwunmi did not receive the proceeds directly into his personal account. Instead, he allegedly used Akinbo’s bank account to collect payments from victims. Investigators traced multiple transactions amounting to millions of naira, with references linked to job placements.

In her statement, Akinbo said she began a relationship with Akinwunmi in September 2023 and later moved in with him in Akure, Ondo State. She noted that he initially introduced himself to her as a police officer but later claimed to be involved in recruitment activities, through which he defrauded unsuspecting members of the public. She also admitted that several payments were made into her account at his request.

Akinwunmi reportedly confessed to receiving a total of ₦2,921,700 from the fraudulent scheme.

The suspects are expected to be charged in court upon the completion of investigations.
