The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 25 students of Bayero University Kano (BUK) for their alleged involvement in cybercrime-related activities.

According to a statement posted on the EFCC’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, the students were apprehended in a sting operation opposite BUK’s New Site, following credible intelligence and weeks of surveillance.

“All the suspects are confirmed to be undergraduates of Bayero University Kano,” the commission stated.

During the operation, EFCC operatives reportedly seized several items including mobile phones, laptops, internet routers, and a Honda Accord vehicle believed to be tools used in committing the alleged crimes.

The arrested students have been identified as:
Ismaíl Nura, Suuleyman Ayeh, Usman Abdulrazaq,

 Emmanuel Chigozie, Akabe Seth,

 Daniel Imoter, Abdulganiyu Jimoh,

 Jafar Abubakar, Usman Nuraddeen,

Mohammad Adnan, Abubakar Abusufyan,

 Abdulmalik Ibrahim, Abubakar Sadiq,

 Daniel Masamu,

Abdulrasheed Abdulsamad,

 Issac Dosunu, Nuraddeen Ogunbiyi,

 Onyeyemi Kaleem, Miracle Joseph,

 Danjuma Musa,

 Ibrahim Mubaraq, Yusuf Salihu,

 Lawal Ibrahim Edebo,

 Abdulmajeed Suleiman, and

 Dauda Abdulhamid.

The EFCC said the suspects were arrested based on evidence linking them to internet fraud, identity theft, and other financial scams.

“They will be charged to court once investigations are completed,” the statement added.

This arrest is the latest in the EFCC’s ongoing crackdown on cybercrime across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The agency has warned that it will not spare anyone found to be abusing the internet to defraud others, regardless of their status or background.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
