EDUCATION MINISTRY DISOWNS UNAUTHORISED NATIONAL PTA GROUP
The Federal Ministry of Education has disowned an association operating under the name National Parent-Teacher Association of the Federal Unity Colleges, saying the group has neither been recognised nor authorised to represent the schools or their Parent-Teacher Associations. The ministry said the organisation does not speak for the individual PTAs in the 118 Federal Unity Colleges across the country and has no official mandate to represent parents, guardians or students.
The ministry made its position known in a statement issued on Monday, September 21, by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade. It warned parents, guardians and members of the public against relying on any directive, appeal, statement or other communication issued by the association. According to the ministry, such communications do not carry official standing because the organisation has not been authorised to act on behalf of the Federal Unity Colleges or their parent associations.
The ministry further advised parents and guardians to obtain information about school activities, students and other matters concerning the Federal Unity Colleges only through official communications from the Federal Ministry of Education or the management of the particular college attended by their children or wards. The clarification is intended to prevent parents from acting on information that could be presented as an official position of the government or the schools without the necessary authorisation.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards have returned to their respective Federal Unity Colleges following the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session nationwide. The minister’s appeal came as the ministry restated its responsibility for the administration of the Federal Unity Colleges and the need for parents to maintain communication with the appropriate school authorities throughout the academic year.
The Federal Ministry of Education also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that students in the Federal Unity Colleges have a safe, supportive and conducive environment for learning and overall development. The ministry said it would continue to work with the management of the colleges to support academic activities and student welfare during the new session. It therefore urged parents to disregard communications from the unauthorised association and depend on verified information from recognised government and school channels.
