EDO TO TRAIN 800 YOUTHS IN DIGITAL SKILLS
The Edo State Government has concluded plans to train 800 youths in advanced digital skills as part of efforts to prepare them for future job opportunities in the global technology space.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Benin during the flag-off of a six-month Advanced Job-Ready Tech Skills Training programme, organised by the state government in partnership with Google and DeepTech Ready.
Iyamu urged participating students to fully utilise the opportunity, describing the programme as a major step towards making Edo youths globally competitive.
“We are going to be certifying about 800 of our students in tech skills so that we can give them opportunities in the international space,” he said.
“We are also embarking on a serious drive in computer-based test centres, bringing students together to learn and compete anywhere in the world.”
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to youth empowerment through technology, adding that Governor Godwin Obaseki had approved the revamp of the state’s tech hub to support the initiative.
According to him, no fewer than 25 computer-based test centres will be established across the state to strengthen digital learning and assessment.
At the event, a 400-level Mechatronics Engineering student of the University of Benin, Miss Elizabeth Chiketarauba, showcased a solar-powered tricycle she invented.
Chiketarauba explained that her experience during a traffic jam inspired the innovation, noting that the tricycle can charge mobile phones, power homes, and be used by barbers and small businesses.
Impressed by the invention, Iyamu announced a ₦1 million support grant for the student on behalf of the Edo State Government and encouraged students to think creatively and embrace innovation.
