The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has thrown its full support behind the implementation of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project, describing it as a game-changer for regional energy security and economic integration.

The regional body made the declaration on Friday during its 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja. ECOWAS leaders praised the project for its potential to provide clean and reliable energy to several West African countries and boost intra-regional trade.

ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, said the pipeline aligns with the region’s vision for energy cooperation and sustainable development. “The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline is a strategic project that will transform the energy landscape of West Africa. ECOWAS is fully behind its successful implementation,” Touray stated.

The multi-billion-dollar project is designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria through several West African countries to Morocco, with the potential to supply Europe. It is expected to create thousands of jobs, boost industrialisation, and reduce the region’s dependence on expensive energy imports.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who is the outgoing ECOWAS Chairman, expressed appreciation for the regional body’s support and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the project. He said the pipeline will serve as a catalyst for economic growth and regional integration.

The project has already received backing from several international financial institutions and development partners. Construction is expected to commence in phases, with the first segment targeting countries along the West African coast.

Stakeholders believe the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline will significantly enhance energy security, promote industrial development, and foster closer economic ties among ECOWAS member states. The regional body has pledged to provide the necessary policy and regulatory support to ensure the project’s successful implementation.
