EBONYI GOVERNMENT DEMOLISHES ILLEGAL MARKET STRUCTURES TO ENFORCE URBAN PLANNING
The Ebonyi State Government has taken decisive action against unauthorised constructions at the Integrated Building Materials Market along the Abakaliki–Afikpo Highway. Several illegal structures were demolished in a move aimed at enforcing urban planning and market regulations.
Professor Nwogo Ajuka Obasi, Commissioner for Market Development and Parks, stated that repeated warnings to owners of these structures had been ignored. “No individual, regardless of status, is above the law. The government will not tolerate actions that undermine its authority or disrupt urban planning,” he stressed.
Obasi expressed concern that some individuals assumed political influence could shield them from consequences. He warned that defaulters would face the full weight of the law, emphasizing that all markets in the state must adhere strictly to their approved layouts.
The demolition exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Market Board, chaired by Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwankwo, with prior notices issued to all owners of unapproved structures. Security agencies were informed in advance, ensuring smooth enforcement of the government’s directive.
Hon. Sunday Inyima, Commissioner for Capital City Development, criticised traders for erecting illegal structures and advised them to seek approval from relevant authorities before any construction within the state capital.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order, safety, and environmental standards across all markets and commercial areas in Ebonyi State.
The enforcement exercise saw participation from top officials, including members of the Market Development Board and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Market Development and Parks, highlighting the state’s resolve to create organized, modern markets.
