EBONYI GOVERNMENT BEGINS LONG-AWAITED GRATUITY PAYMENTS TO RETIREES
Relief for Retirees as Ebonyi Government Begins Payment of Gratuities Dating Back to 1996
There’s a wave of hope and relief for many retired workers in Ebonyi State as the government has officially kickstarted the process of paying gratuities to local government staff who retired as far back as 1996.
Governor Francis Nwifuru made this move official with the inauguration of a six-member committee, headed by Mrs. Catherine Ogbu, tasked with verifying and paying genuine retirees across the state. Other members of the committee include Mrs. Mbam Joy, Dr. Cajethan Oketa, Hon. Justice Iheanachor Chima, Comrade David Elom (representing the Nigerian Union of Teachers), and Mr. Martins Uguru as Secretary.
Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Nwifuru emphasized that this initiative is not because the state has surplus funds, but because honoring those who served the state is just as important as building roads and other infrastructure.
“We are doing this because it matters. Everyone who gave their time and strength to serve Ebonyi at the local government level deserves their full entitlements,” he stated.
The governor also gave clear instructions to the committee: verify and pay retirees on the same day. He stressed the need for speed, transparency, and fairness throughout the process.
“Once someone is verified, they should receive their alert immediately. Use all available documents to guide your work and make sure no one is left behind,” Nwifuru directed.
The announcement, made in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, also acknowledged the support of local government chairmen for their cooperation and commitment to the process.
This move is a significant step toward social justice for many elderly citizens who have waited years — even decades — for the reward of their service. For many families, it’s not just about the money, but about dignity and recognition.
