EBOLA: FG QUARANTINES HIGH-RISK CONTACTS, ALLAYS FEARS; PATIENT ZERO SHOWS SIGNS OF RECOVERY
The Federal Government has placed people with high-risk exposure to Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient in designated quarantine facilities, as efforts continue to prevent further spread.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed this during a briefing in Abuja. He said the patient’s latest laboratory results showed encouraging signs of improvement, although it was too early to confirm recovery.
According to the minister, the patient had no symptoms when she arrived in Nigeria but became ill a few days later.
Health officials have since traced contacts connected to her household, the hospital where she received treatment and a private medical facility she visited.
Pate explained that those identified were assessed according to their level of exposure. High-risk contacts were placed in quarantine facilities, while other contacts were being supervised under public health measures.
Quarantine allows health officials to monitor people who may have been exposed. Being identified as a contact does not automatically mean a person has contracted Ebola.
The government said its immediate priority was to keep the infection from spreading into communities through contact tracing, monitoring and continued care for the patient.
Pate also said there were no restrictions on public gatherings at the time of the briefing.
While the patient’s progress offers hope, the minister stressed that the outcome remained uncertain and that response teams must sustain their containment efforts.
