EBOLA FEARS MOUNT AS FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS INTENSIFY SURVEILLANCE AFTER INFECTED DIPLOMAT SUFFERS ORGAN FAILURE
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirms imported case as Bundibugyo strain while health authorities deploy containment measures, contact tracing, and border restrictions nationwide
The Federal Government and state authorities across Nigeria have heightened national health emergency surveillance following confirmation that a foreign diplomat diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Abuja has deteriorated into multi-organ failure.
Speaking during an emergency incident management meeting convened in Abuja, the Director of Public Health Laboratory Service at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Olajumoke Babatunde, disclosed that multiple molecular diagnostic tests confirmed the presence of the rare viral species, which mirrors the strain behind recent outbreaks in Uganda and Central Africa.
Health officials revealed that the index patient, a foreign national who arrived on an international flight from East Africa, was admitted to a private medical facility in the Federal Capital Territory for several days before specialized laboratory testing established the infection.
In response to the clinical development, the NCDC launched a multi-sectoral incident management framework encompassing aggressive contact tracing, active case surveillance, and enhanced infection prevention protocols across isolation centers nationwide.
Concurrently, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development directed civil aviation authorities to place dozens of identified contacts on a strict 21-day no-fly restriction, while state governments across all geopolitical zones have reactivated rapid response teams and health screening checkpoints at land and air entry points.
Addressing citizens to prevent public apprehension, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, assured that public health institutions are operating with robust containment capacity, urging the public to maintain strict hygiene practices and rely solely on verified government health advisories.
