DSS TO ARRAIGN SOWORE ON CYBERCRIME CHARGES OVER ANTI-TINUBU POST

Controversial activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, is set to be arraigned today by the Department of State Services (DSS) on alleged cybercrime charges.

Sowore, alongside two other accused persons, will appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a five-count charge bordering on allegedly making false social media posts against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, purportedly aimed at causing public disorder.

At the time of filing this report, Sowore had already arrived at the courtroom accompanied by a large number of supporters to take his plea.

The charges, filed on September 16, 2025, also listed X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) as co-defendants in the case.

According to the charge sheet marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, Sowore allegedly used his official handle @YeleSowore to post:

“This criminal @officialPBAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

Prosecutors argue that the post, made on August 25, 2025, contravenes Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024, which prohibits knowingly spreading false information online.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 25 lawyers have appeared in court to represent Sowore in what is expected to be a high-profile legal battle.

The case has already generated heated public debate, with critics describing the trial as a clampdown on free speech, while others argue it is a test of Nigeria’s cybercrime law enforcement.
