Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in collaboration with the Nigerian military have reportedly foiled a planned kidnapping of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) candidates in parts of the South-East region.

Security sources said the operation was carried out following credible intelligence on the movement of suspected armed groups planning to abduct students during examination activities. The swift response of the joint security team led to the disruption of the plot before it could be executed.

During the operation, weapons and other items believed to be used for criminal activities were recovered from the suspects’ hideout. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the gang who fled the scene.

Security officials described the intervention as part of broader efforts to protect schools, students, and examination centres from attacks, especially during critical academic periods.

The rescued students were not harmed, and examination activities in the affected areas reportedly continued under enhanced security surveillance.

The DSS and military have intensified patrols and surveillance across vulnerable communities in the South-East, urging residents to provide timely information that could help prevent criminal activities.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding educational institutions and ensuring that students can sit for their examinations without fear of violence or disruption.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
