DSS ARRESTS MAN FOR ALLEGEDLY CALLING FOR MILITARY COUP ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Innocent Chukwuma for allegedly using his social media account to canvass for a military takeover in Nigeria. Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the arrest on his X account on Wednesday.
According to Makama, operatives tracked Chukwuma to Oyigbo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he was apprehended. The arrest followed a series of posts on the suspect’s X handle, @TheAgroman, that openly called for the removal of the elected government and urged Nigerians to back a military intervention.
One of the posts, quoted by Makama, read in part:
“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now… The military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. Only the military can reset this country. Support them.”
The DSS confirmed that Chukwuma is in custody and that a source familiar with the probe said the suspect is cooperating with investigators. No formal statement from the DSS has been released to the public at the time of reporting.
Commentators say the arrest highlights growing official sensitivity to online content that is perceived to threaten national stability. Under Nigerian law, calls for an unlawful change of government can attract serious criminal charges, and security agencies have in recent years monitored social media for posts that might incite violence or undermine constitutional order.
The case is expected to proceed under the relevant security and criminal statutes as investigators examine the suspect’s online activity and any potential connections or accomplices. The DSS has not disclosed whether formal charges have been filed.
