DSS Charges Young Man for Calling for Tinubu’s Overthrow on Social Media

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a case against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, for allegedly calling for the overthrow of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration through a military coup.

According to court documents, the DSS submitted a six-count charge against Onukwume at the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025. The filing was made on November 11, 2025, by A. M. Danalami on behalf of the security agency.

Onukwume, who resides in Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, reportedly made several posts in October 2025 on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @theagroman, calling for a coup and urging the military to take over power from the current government.

In one of the tweets cited in the charge, he allegedly wrote:

“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”

Another of his alleged posts read:

“It will happen eventually, Nigerians. The military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West... only the military can reset this country.”

The DSS stated that these posts were made with the intent to cause fear, public alarm, and hatred toward the government. They also accused Onukwume of attempting to incite the military and disrupt public peace through his online statements.

According to the charge sheet, his actions violate Section 59 (1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24 (1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).

The security agency emphasized that such online incitement poses a serious national security threat, especially when directed at the democratic institutions of the country.

As of now, the Federal High Court in Abuja is expected to schedule his arraignment date, where he will formally face the charges.
