A yet-to-be-identified commercial driver has been confirmed dead after a 40-foot container-laden truck fell onto his Nissan Micra taxi at Soka, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State.

The tragic incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, during a rainfall. Eyewitnesses said the truck, loaded with bales of clothing, lost balance while trying to avoid concrete barricades left on the road by contractors.

The impact crushed the Micra, trapping the driver inside. Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police, and Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) were on the scene to retrieve the driver’s body and clear the wreckage.

An eyewitness, Yusuf, blamed the accident on the concrete barriers, which he said should have been removed after road repairs.

“The trailer was coming from Lagos inward Ibadan. The driver tried to dodge the big concrete barriers left on the road. In the process, he hit the Micra and lost control, causing the container to fall. Those barriers shouldn’t still be there,” Yusuf explained.

An FRSC officer at the scene confirmed that the truck swerved to avoid the barrier but struck the Micra before overturning.

The General Manager of OYTMA, Adeoye Adekola, also confirmed the driver’s death, saying the body had been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road.

“We have removed the corpse and detached the truck from the container. The major causes of the crash were impatience, speeding, and lack of reflectors on the road barriers,” Adekola stated.

He added that normal traffic flow had since been restored in the area after the wreckage was cleared.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
