DON’T USE POWER TO MUZZLE CRITICS, IRETI KINGIBE TELLS DAVE UMAHI
The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has cautioned politicians against exploiting their positions to suppress critics.
Kingibe spoke on Friday while addressing journalists shortly after the release of a woman identified only as Tracy Ohiri. Ohiri had accused the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, of owing her N250 million 12 years ago when Umahi served as governor of Ebonyi State.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore had previously confronted Umahi at the FCT Police Command over allegations that police were used to settle personal disputes.
Reacting to the situation, Senator Kingibe said:
“Injustice, regardless of who commits it, signals a culture of impunity. This is not just about powerful individuals; it applies to anyone who has the means and opportunity.
“For democracy to thrive, this widespread culture must be addressed. As the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory and chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women’s Affairs, it is my duty to protect my constituents.
“When I learned that a constituent had been wrongfully detained despite protective legislation, I intervened. She was unwell and hospitalized. I mobilized colleagues and contacted the Senate President to ensure justice was pursued at the highest level.
“I vowed not to rest until justice was served, and I am pleased to report that the woman has been released.”
