DON’T SELL YOUR NIN FOR N2,000 — NIMC WARNS NIGERIANS AGAINST DATA FRAUD

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians not to sell or share their National Identification Number (NIN) or any personal data for small sums of money.

In a statement released on Sunday, NIMC spokesman Kayode Adegoke expressed concern over a growing scam where young fraudsters are offering between N1,500 and N2,000 to unsuspecting Nigerians in exchange for their personal details. These details are then reportedly sold to some fintech companies for around N5,000.

NIMC described the act as a major security risk, saying that those who give out their personal data could face serious consequences. “We want to make it clear that the NIMC will not be responsible for any damage or misuse that results from individuals sharing their information for financial gain,” the commission stated.

The commission reminded Nigerians never to reveal their NIN or related personal information to unauthorized persons or companies. They also emphasized that any NIN submitted for services must be verified before use.

To help citizens protect their data, NIMC encouraged everyone to download the NINAuth App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The app allows users to manage and secure their NIN, and control who has access to their personal information.

In these times when data theft is on the rise, the message is simple: Protect your identity. Don’t sell your data. It’s not worth the risk.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
