Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has asked to be excluded from discussions suggesting he could replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.

Dogara’s comments come amid growing speculation that the All Progressives Congress (APC) may again present a Muslim–Muslim ticket in the next election cycle.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former Speaker urged political stakeholders to focus on doing what is right rather than acting out of fear or political pressure.

“I would sincerely have pleaded to be left out of this conversation, but let me say this: whatever decisions we make should not be driven by fear of anyone breathing down our necks. They should be based on what is right,” he said.

Dogara stressed the importance of inclusive governance, noting that Nigeria’s leadership must reflect the country’s diversity.

“We are talking about running an inclusive government and bringing everyone together so that we can build a nation that works for all,” he added.

He also argued that conversations around rotational leadership should not be limited to regional considerations but should include broader religious balance.

“When we talk about rotational presidency, it’s not just about Northern Christians but about the Christian faith as a whole. If a Muslim is chosen, whether from the North or South, he represents the Muslim community. Likewise, a Christian, wherever he comes from, represents the Christian faith. That is how religious balance is achieved,” Dogara said.

On the possibility of selecting a Christian running mate in 2027, Dogara acknowledged that such discussions are already underway.

“It is a discussion, and I am aware that conversations along those lines are taking place. Ultimately, whatever decision the president makes will stand. Historically, no sitting president has lost his party’s primary, so it is assumed the president will secure the party’s ticket,” he stated.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
