The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced plans to initiate a nationwide strike beginning Thursday, July 25, if the Federal Government fails to address its outstanding demands before the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum on July 23.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Sunday, NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, confirmed that the association is prepared to suspend medical services across the country unless urgent action is taken.

“Our demands are non-negotiable—they are essential for the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the wellbeing of medical professionals,” he stated.

The ultimatum, issued on July 2, was in response to a circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission regarding revised allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal service. The NMA rejected the circular, arguing it violates previously established agreements and undermines the welfare of its members.

“We’ve made our position clear. If by July 23 the government does not respond appropriately, we will be compelled to take industrial action,” Prof. Audu warned.

He described the circular as unilateral and lacking proper consultation, stressing that “any decision affecting our members must come from mutual agreement—not imposition.”

While efforts have been made to engage government officials and prevent a breakdown in services, time is running out. Prof. Audu said that during a recent meeting involving key health officials—including Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Pate and other top stakeholders—there was agreement to hold further discussions.

“A follow-up meeting was scheduled for last week, but it was postponed due to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” he noted. “We are now awaiting a rescheduled meeting with the Wages Commission, Finance Ministry, and Health Ministry.”

Prof. Audu reiterated that unless urgent dialogue resumes in the coming days, the NMA would proceed with the planned strike.

In a separate communique released by the NMA Katsina State branch after a State Executive Council meeting on Saturday, the association condemned the controversial circular and demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The document, jointly signed by Dr. Muhammadu Sani (Chairman) and Dr. Yahya Salisu (Secretary), warned that the branch could not guarantee uninterrupted health services if the federal government fails to act swiftly.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
