DISABILITY GROUPS DEMAND ACTION ON OGUN LAW

Disability rights organisations in Ogun State have called for the full implementation of the state’s Disability Law, nearly nine years after it was signed.

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities and the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria made the demand during a joint press briefing in Abeokuta.

The organisations urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to provide the necessary direction to conclude the implementation process before the end of his administration.

The Ogun State Disability Law was signed on December 27, 2017, by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

The groups said the law had not been fully operationalised, leaving persons with disabilities without the institutions and systems required to enforce its provisions.

They said continued delays had affected areas including education, healthcare, transportation, employment, economic participation and political engagement.

The organisations explained that their campaign was aimed at securing implementation rather than confronting the state government.

They also said possible amendments to the law should not prevent the existing legislation from being implemented while changes are considered through the appropriate legislative process.

The groups said they had held meetings, consultations and made several appeals to government officials since 2025.

They called for concrete action and offered to work with the government on implementation and possible amendments.
