DIG: EXTORTION, RIGHTS ABUSE UNDERMINE POLICE PROFESSIONALISM

A Deputy Inspector-General of Police has said that extortion and human rights abuses are clear signs of unprofessional conduct within the Nigeria Police Force.

He made the remark while addressing officers on discipline, accountability, and ethical standards in policing across the country.

According to him, such behaviours damage public trust and weaken the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts, especially in communities that rely on police protection.

The senior officer stressed that professionalism in policing requires respect for human rights, transparency in operations, and strict adherence to the rule of law.

He warned that officers found engaging in misconduct, including extortion, would face disciplinary measures in line with police regulations.

The DIG also called for improved training and supervision to ensure that officers understand their responsibilities and operate within approved guidelines.

Security analysts say concerns over police misconduct have remained a recurring issue in Nigeria, prompting repeated calls for reforms and stronger oversight mechanisms.

The police leadership reiterated its commitment to improving public confidence and ensuring accountability within the force.
