A Lagos-based advocacy organisation, the Take It Back Movement, has announced the release of Rasheed Wasiu, who had been in detention following his involvement in the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

The #EndSARS demonstrations, which erupted in October 2020, were nationwide youth-led protests against police brutality, particularly the activities of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets across the country during the protests, which in some states were accompanied by clashes, mass arrests, and allegations of human rights abuses.

In a statement issued by the group’s Lagos State Coordinator, Adekunle Adeyemi Taofeek, the organisation disclosed that Wasiu regained his freedom on Wednesday, March 4, after a Lagos court struck out the case against him.
The development effectively ended nearly six years of detention.

The group described the outcome as a major step forward in its long-running campaign for the release of individuals arrested in connection with the protests.

“Today marks yet another milestone in our ongoing struggle for justice, as the case of Rasheed Wasiu was officially struck out, restoring his long-awaited freedom.
This development reinforces our belief that persistence, solidarity, and commitment to justice will always yield results,” the statement read.

According to the organisation, sustained advocacy, legal intervention, and public pressure have also led to the release of several other individuals detained over the protests. Those freed include Sunday Okoro, Olumide Fatai, Oluwole Yisa, Daniel Joyibo, Adigun Sodiq, Kehinde Shola, Salaudeen Kamilu, Sodiq Usseni, and Azeez Isiaka.

The group further commended a legal practitioner identified as Barrister Taiwo of Citizens Gavel for assuming responsibility for Wasiu’s legal representation after the death of human rights lawyer Adeshina Ogunlana.

It noted that Taiwo’s dedication, professionalism, and determination were instrumental in securing Wasiu’s release.

The organisation also paid tribute to the late Ogunlana, stating that his commitment and earlier efforts on the case laid the groundwork for the eventual outcome.

Reaffirming its mission, the group emphasised its resolve to continue advocating for victims of injustice and ensuring accountability from institutions.

“We reiterate our unwavering commitment to standing with victims of injustice and holding institutions accountable. This struggle continues until justice is not only pursued but fully realised for all,” the statement added.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
