DESPITE PUBLIC OUTCRY, LAGOS COUNCIL RENAMES SIX STREETS IN ETI-OSA
Eti-Osa Council Renames Six Streets Amid Ongoing Street-Naming Controversy
The Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State has gone ahead with the renaming of six major streets, despite growing public criticism surrounding similar decisions across the state.
This latest move follows the recent uproar in Bariga LCDA, where the controversial renaming of the popular Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop sparked public outrage and drew condemnation from notable voices, including human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, who called the move unconstitutional.
In a public notice signed by Council Manager, Mrs. Oluwakemi Oshun, the Eti-Osa council announced that the new street names take effect immediately, urging residents, businesses, and stakeholders to update their records accordingly.
According to the council, the renaming is part of an ongoing street-naming and revalidation project aimed at preserving cultural and historical relevance, while improving urban planning, navigation, and local identity.
🆕 The newly renamed streets are:
Tony Amadasun Road (Igbo Efon) → Chief Femi Pedro Road
Dr. Udo Wogu Drive (Chevy View) → Chief Adebola Dosunmu Drive
Augusta Orji Street (Aro Ologolo) → Alhaji Adio Mayegun Street
Chike Mba Close (Osapa London) → Hon. Sikiru Ashorota Close
Ugochukwu Orji Street (Igbo Efon) → Barr. Wale Sanni Street
Fubara Dublin Green Street (Igbo Efon) → Rafiu Olukolu Street
While the council insists the project is for the public good, many Lagosians have raised concerns about the lack of consultation, the suddenness of the changes, and the potential erasure of diverse identities within the city.
As more councils initiate similar renaming schemes, the conversation around public input, heritage preservation, and transparency continues to grow louder in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
