DENGUE FEVER OUTBREAK CONFIRMED IN EDO STATE — NCDC ISSUES HEALTH ALERT
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed a dengue fever outbreak in Edo State, following lab test results from cases reported between June 9 and 13, 2025.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness that causes high fever, severe headaches, rashes, and joint pain. In serious cases, it can lead to internal bleeding, shock, or even death. There is no specific cure, making prevention through mosquito control and vaccination extremely important.
According to the NCDC, the outbreak in Edo highlights the increasing threat posed by diseases spread through mosquito bites, especially during the rainy season.
“We are working closely with Edo State health authorities to improve disease surveillance, support medical treatment, and ramp up mosquito control efforts,” the NCDC stated.
The agency has also issued a national health alert, warning of a higher risk of infectious disease outbreaks — including cholera and yellow fever — due to heavy flooding in several parts of the country.
Floodwaters often lead to poor sanitation and create perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the likelihood of such diseases spreading quickly.
The NCDC urges Nigerians, especially those in flood-prone areas, to take extra precautions:
Use insect repellents and mosquito nets
Keep surroundings clean and dry
Report early symptoms like fever, rash, or bleeding to a health facility
Health experts emphasize that awareness and quick action are crucial to prevent the situation from worsening.
